GLP-1 Medication for Weight Loss

▶What is GLP-1?

GLP-1 (Glucagon-Like Peptide 1) is a hormone produced in the human pancreas. When we eat, this hormone is released from the small intestine and plays a role in regulating blood sugar levels and suppressing appetite.

Role 1: Blood sugar regulation
When we eat, a hormone called "insulin" is secreted from the pancreas to lower blood sugar levels. Insulin works by either utilizing excess sugar in the bloodstream as energy or converting it into fat for storage, thereby preventing sustained high blood sugar levels. GLP-1 is secreted from the intestine and stimulates insulin secretion to control blood sugar levels.

Role 2: Metabolic effects
GLP-1 has the effect of increasing energy consumption in human fat cells. It also inhibits gastric motility, slowing down the transportation of food from the stomach to the intestine, thereby mitigating the rise in postprandial blood sugar levels.

Role 3: Appetite suppression
GLP-1 stimulates the appetite center in the human brain, resulting in appetite suppression. This effect is particularly beneficial for weight loss, as it reduces food intake and facilitates weight management.

▶ GLP-1 as an obesity treatment drug

GLP-1 is well known as a drug for diabetes, but it is also widely used as an obesity treatment drug all over the world.

As explained earlier, the effects of GLP-1 in suppressing gastrointestinal function, gently digesting and absorbing meals, and suppressing appetite have been found to be effective for obesity, and its weight reduction effects have been observed in various clinical studies.

There are two methods of administering GLP-1: oral medication and injections. Generally, injections are considered more effective than oral medication. The injection is administered subcutaneously, where you press the syringe against your abdomen.

▶ Administration method and precautions

For injections, there are different types available, such as daily injections and once-a-week injections. Our clinic provides the daily injection. In some cases, weight reduction effects can be observed within 1 to 2 weeks.

※Caution! Due to the increased demand for GLP-1 drugs, there is currently a global shortage of stock. As a result, various pharmaceutical companies have developed and sold unapproved generic GLP-1 drugs, which has become a social issue.
Generic versions of GLP-1 drugs that have not been thoroughly tested for safety are circulating, so please refrain from purchasing and using GLP-1 drugs on your own without proper evaluation and guidance.

▶ Side effects

GLP-1 drugs have a well-established track record of widespread use worldwide, and thorough evaluations of their side effects have been conducted, making them generally safe medications. However, the following side effects have been reported:

① Gastrointestinal side effects
Relatively common side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and constipation, which are related to the gastrointestinal system. These symptoms usually occur after starting the treatment and tend to improve over several weeks to months. However, in some cases, the symptoms may persist for some individuals.

② Hypoglycemia
GLP-1 itself has minimal risk of causing hypoglycemia. However, when used in combination with other diabetes medications in individuals who already have diabetes, there is an increased risk of hypoglycemia. It is important to consult with us before use.

③ Serious side effects
Although rare, there have been reports of acute pancreatitis in some individuals. While it is not a common side effect, if you experience sudden abdominal pain or fever, it is important to seek medical attention immediately.

④ Other side effects
Other reported side effects include headache, dizziness, fatigue, and injection site reactions such as swelling, pain, or itching. Generally, these are mild and transient symptoms.

When initiating GLP-1 injections, it is important to start with a low dose to minimize side effects and gradually increase the dosage while monitoring your condition. It is crucial to consult with us to determine the appropriate dosage that suits your body's needs.

Effects of GLP-1

▶ Appetite suppression

GLP-1 inhibits the function of the gastrointestinal system, slowing down digestion and suppressing appetite, which helps prevent overeating. Without the need for strict dietary restrictions, it can naturally reduce food intake, leading to significant weight loss effects.

Additionally, it has the advantage of being less likely to result in overeating rebound caused by stress, because there is no need to endure strict and difficult dietary restrictions. Moreover, it reduces the feeling of hunger, so even in situations where others are eating tempting food, there is no sense of irritability or stress.

▶ No Need for Intense Exercise!

Generally, in order to lose weight, we need muscle training to increase metabolism and rigorous aerobic exercises for fat burning. However, not many people can sustain these activities solely based on their own willpower. GLP-1 is also recommended for those who have the motivation to exercise but are unsure which sports gym to go to in Myanmar or are unable to find suitable places for activities like running.

However, this does not mean that exercise is completely unnecessary.

Exercise offers many benefits beyond weight loss, including improving cardiovascular function, enhancing basic physical fitness, and providing stress relief. We recommend to engage in moderate exercise for these reasons.

▶ SGLT-2 inhibitor

SGLT-2 inhibitors are oral medications widely used for the treatment of diabetes. They work by eliminating excess sugar in the urine, thereby reducing absorbed calories. The main side effect is the excretion of sugar in the urine, which may increase the risk of urinary tract and bladder infections. However, with proper hygiene practices, this should not pose a significant issue. Additionally, SGLT-2 inhibitors have a diuretic effect, which may increase the frequency of urination during medication use.
